Toby likes cool tech. The only thing Toby likes more than cool tech is seeing cool tech used for good.

When I joined Hypershell, I saw an opportunity to test exoskeletons in professional scenarios where performance could change lives. Search and rescue felt like a natural fit—teams that needed to move fast, carry heavy gear, and operate in difficult terrain. Formidable environmental challenges that needed to be overcome not for personal victories but the greater good.

Meeting Weber County SAR

Eli Whitman leads the Mountain Rescue Team at Weber County Sheriff SEARCH AND RESCUE (WCSAR). They run one of the most advanced aerial rescue units in the world and have a track record of adopting new technology when it works.

When I reached out, Eli was interested but cautious. He wanted proof the gear could handle real missions—flexible, durable, and practical. We decided to keep it simple: send two Hypershell X Pros to his team for a six-month trial.

"In Weber County SAR, endurance is critical. Hypershell gives us faster movement, reduced fatigue, and stronger readiness to support our community. When minutes matter, it helps us respond quicker and last longer." —Eli Whitman

Into the Mountains

The first video Eli sent back showed his team rappelling down a cliff wearing the exoskeletons. The leg bars were already scratched up. We knew these weren't demo units anymore. They'd gone into real service.

Since then, the X Pros have joined actual missions. The feedback has been practical: requests for more shoulder support with big rescue packs, stronger buckles, extra batteries for long outings.

Performance Under Load

  • Strong performance in rugged conditions

  • Battery life: 60-90 minutes under heavy use (uphill with loaded rescue pack)

  • For backcountry missions, teams recommend minimum 3 batteries with drone delivery backup

  • Units remained functional even after battery depletion during callouts

Practical Improvements Identified

  • Need better shoulder harness integration for large rescue packs

  • Interior leg buckle requires proper fitting to prevent snagging

  • Battery connection points wear naturally, making swaps easier over time

  • Team developed field innovations like rubber bands to mark charged batteries

But the verdict was clear. The gear works!

The Moment That Mattered

During a mission to recover human remains, the team brought a forensic investigator from the city. He wasn't used to trekking through the rough terrain and quickly fell behind. They strapped him into an X Pro. At first he felt awkward, but after adjusting the fit, his expression changed completely. He found his stride, not having to worry as much about the hike and was able to focus on his work at the site.

The team was impressed. The investigator was thrilled. That moment left a mark on everyone.

Real-World Validation

WCSAR has integrated our exoskeletons into their standard equipment rotation. The feedback has been practical and honest. They've identified specific improvements while confirming the core technology works in demanding conditions.

The partnership validates what we're building. Exoskeletons can be great for hiking or cycling, mobility, or tourism, but they have a place in helping professionals do difficult jobs in challenging environments.

If our gear can play a role in mountain rescue operations, we're on the right track.

Terrain as Load: How Seasonal Ground Conditions Change Physical Demand

How Hypershell Reduces Friction for New Users
